Why South Bay yards go synthetic
Summer-proof green that still looks right in February.
Santa Clara Valley summers are long and dry, a lot of local yards sit on dense clay that drains slowly in winter, and many homeowners are simply tired of paying to water and mow a lawn they barely use. Artificial turf solves the mowing and watering. Whether it also looks natural, drains well, and stays flat for years depends almost entirely on how it's installed.
This site is built to help you plan that well: what goes under the turf, what drives the cost, which product fits pets or putting, and what to ask any installer before you sign.

The part you won't see
Good turf is mostly what's underneath it.
Two installs can use the same turf and look identical on day one. A year later, one is flat and draining; the other has ripples, a soft spot by the gate, and a puddle after every rain. The difference is excavation depth, base material, compaction, and slope.

What moves the price of a turf project
We don't publish one-size-fits-all prices because South Bay yards vary too much. A fair estimate comes after someone measures the space and checks access and soil. These are the factors that move the number most:
- Square footage and shape. Curves, planters, and narrow strips mean more cutting, seams, and waste than a simple rectangle.
- Removal and disposal. Taking out existing grass, roots, and soil (and hauling it away) is often a major part of the labor.
- Base depth and drainage. Heavy clay soil, low spots, or pets may call for a deeper base or added drainage.
- Access. A wide driveway approach is faster than a narrow side gate where every load goes by wheelbarrow.
- Turf product. Pile height, face weight, fiber type, and backing (standard vs. fully permeable) vary widely.
- Infill and extras. Infill type, edging or bender board, gopher wire, sprinkler capping, and borders all add line items.
Before you hire anyone
Five questions worth asking every installer
- How deep will you excavate, and what base material goes back in?
- How will water drain, especially on clay soil or near the house?
- Which turf product and backing, and is the manufacturer's warranty in writing?
- What's your California contractor license number? (You can look it up at cslb.ca.gov.)
- What exactly is included: removal, haul-away, edging, sprinkler capping, infill?
