Pet turf and dog runs that drain, rinse clean, and don't hold odor

Dogs are the toughest test for artificial grass. Urine has to pass straight through, the base has to let it keep going, and the infill has to fight odor, so pet turf is built differently from a show lawn.

What makes turf pet-friendly

Most odor and staining complaints come from liquid that gets trapped somewhere in the system. A pet-focused install deals with each layer:

Flow-through backing
Fully permeable backing lets liquid drain across the entire surface instead of only through punched holes, so less sits under the fibers.
A free-draining base
Crushed rock compacted with an intentional slope. On the slow-draining clay common around the South Bay, a deeper base or extra drainage may be worth it in the dog's favorite zone.
Odor-control infill
Zeolite or treated infills help absorb and neutralize ammonia between rinses. Plain sand on its own tends to hold smell.
A shorter, denser pile
Easier to pick up after, quicker to rinse, and less likely to mat in a well-worn path along the fence.
Secure edges
Diggers go for edges first. Firmly secured perimeters, and sometimes a buried border, keep paws from lifting the turf.

Planning a dog run

Dogs tend to use the same spots and run the same lines. When you request a quote, mention where your dog likes to go and run so the layout can put the best drainage there. Common setups include a side-yard dog run along a fence, a designated potty area near the back door, or a full backyard with a heavier-duty product.

Think about shade and a nearby hose bib, too. Turf can get warm on summer afternoons, and a quick rinse cools it down and flushes the surface.

Keeping pet turf fresh

  • Pick up solids promptly and hose down the potty area regularly, more often in hot weather.
  • Use an enzyme-based turf cleaner on high-use spots.
  • Top up odor-control infill when the surface starts to feel thin or smell lingers.
  • Brush high-traffic paths now and then so the fibers stay upright.

If an existing turf lawn already smells or drains poorly, the fix is often a deep clean and infill top-up, and sometimes a base correction. See turf repair.
